President-elect Barack Obama called for Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich to resign today in wake of U.S. Attorney Patrick Fitzgerald’s allegation that the governor engaged in “a political corruption crime spree” including numerous pay-to-play schemes such as awarding Obama’s vacated U.S. Senate seat to the highest bidder and shaking down a children’s hospital for a campaign contribution in exchange for a state grant.

We don’t need another wiretap to know how the foul-mouthed Blagojevich likely responded to Obama’s suggestion: “F*** him.”

I don’t expect Blagojevich to resign, at least anytime soon, even as numerous Illinois politicians have joined the chorus of voices calling for him to step down. I guess, for now, we’ll have to settle for the resignation of one of Blagojevich’s deputy governors, Bob Greenlee.
